Recently we sat with Michael Wood (Mick) CEO of Coral Products PLC and discussed recent news and reports with regards to recent recycling figures for plastic. This editorial is based upon his comments and feedback.

According to recent report, the UK’s recycling push is at risk from a lack of usable recycled plastic. Something Coral Products PLC identified two years ago subsequently investing in a state of the art plastic recycling system now operational in its manufacturing facility in Haydock UK.

A survey of the companies that make product out of plastic has revealed a lack of quantity and quality of recycled raw materials to use. The recycling unit installed in Haydock has been designed to both process high levels, and improve the quality of, material being processed via its unique cleaning process.

With targets to significantly increase in the EU and UK the amount of recycled plastic used in products by 2025 are “practically impossible” to meet, according to the research, by the European Plastic Converters Association.

Quality recycled plastic material, as well its availability, needs to improve drastically. Something the Coral Products PLC group are striving to achieve. See above

In addition to the investment ?in better recycling technologies Coral PLC are committed to reducing plastic use by redesigning current and adding disruptive innovative products that become part of the recycling chain without compromising the finished quality thus removing many tons of material from the cycle.

Friends of the Earth campaigner Julian Kirby said: “The reason we have a dearth of good quality recycled material is because we have such poor collection infrastructure, and ensure good quality local authority collection.”

The government recently announced measures to improve recycling, including the introduction of consistent recycling rules across all councils to clear up confusion and a bottle deposit scheme in 2023.

By design our recycling plant and products can support the change required by both product manufacturer?s and councils.

Each of our products for kerbside collection and food waste are designed for longevity, multi use and strength. Utilising our recycled material to create new products reduces impact on the environment, closes the loop creating a circular economic product.

Our new and innovative design 55 litre kerbside caddy is much lighter than others on the market and is comparable by strength and quality standards to the heavier plastic alternatives. The new 23 litre food waste caddy is also lighter in weight and is ergonomically designed to fit in small spaces and lock in food smells.

With the need to meet change our products are meeting those needs.
